Prevalence of congenital heart disease in neonatal ICU at moderate high altitude

Abstract
This study investigates
the prevalence of congenital heart disease (CHD) among neonates admitted to the
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at a healthcare facility located at a
moderate high altitude. Variations in altitude have been known to influence
fetal and neonatal physiology, potentially affecting the incidence of
congenital anomalies, including CHD. A retrospective review was conducted over
a two-year period, analyzing medical records of neonates admitted to the NICU.
Data collected included demographic information, clinical diagnosis,
echocardiographic findings, and outcomes. The prevalence of CHD was determined
and stratified by type and severity. The study found a higher-than-expected
prevalence of CHD compared to low-altitude populations, with ventricular septal
defects being the most common anomaly. Findings suggest that moderate
high-altitude environments may contribute to an increased risk of certain
congenital heart conditions. These results underscore the need for routine
cardiac screening in neonates born or cared for at elevated altitudes and
warrant further research into the potential etiological factors linked to
altitude exposure during gestation. Understanding these patterns is crucial for
improving neonatal outcomes and tailoring healthcare delivery in such
geographic regions.
